Javen As The Nation's Best

Life's no bed of roses, but the winner always finds a way to bull towards victory. This can be reflected on the newly crowned 56th Malaysia Table Tennis Open Championships 2019 men's singles champion Choong Javen, after settling as a quarterfinalist for the previous 3 years. The accomplishment makes Javen the second Malaysia Open men's singles champion from PJ Union Table Tennis Centre, after precedented by Leong Chee Feng at 2017.

The 18-year old who was also a promising star of the national team had achieved numerous breakthrough records throughout this year, most notably were the 2019 Philippines SEA Games men's doubles third placing at 9th December. The men's singles champion in this tournament shows Javen's determination to surpass the heights of his senior players in his future table tennis career.


The 56th Malaysia Table Tennis Open Championships 2019 had commerced at Pay Fong High School, Melacca from 17 to 20 December. PJ Union had seen a participation of 5 national team players representing Selangor whom besides Choong Javen, were Amos Ling, Sam Yuk Siong, Lee Yong Yi and Leow Yi Wenn. In the men's team category, the combined might of Javen, Amos and Yong Yi proved owerpowering, eliminating opponents without missing a point on their way to the finals. The trio lost to Kuala Lumpur (A) 1-3 with good grace, obtaining a silver in the category. In the women's team category, Leow Yi Wenn fought hard with her team to secure a placing in the quarterfinals, beating Kuala Lumpur and Putrajaya in the preliminary stage. The team eventually lost to Kedah 2-3 in the quarterfinals.

Besides the team events, Javen also shone in the individual events, bagging two bronzes in the men's doubles and mixed doubles. In the men's doubles category, Javen paired with his recent SEA Games partner Amos Ling to charge into the semi-finals, losing regretfully to the Kuala Lumpur pair of Muhd Ashraf Haiqal/Mohd Hashri Fikri 1-3 who eventually went on to win the champion of the category.

Meanwhile in the mixed doubles category, Choong Javen partnered with compatriot Lee Xin Ni to claim another hard-fought bronze. The duo lost to Kuala Lumpur pair of Tan Yi Heng/Lim Jing Shuen in the semi-finals.

The outstanding performances shown by Javen and Amos had also earned them a place in the Top 10 men players of the country.
